During the war, private citizens like Wren donated their dogs for duty. Chips shipped out to the War Dog Grooming Centre, Front Royal, Virginia, in 1942 for grooming every bit a sentry domestic dog. He served with the 3rd Infantry Segmentation in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. His handler was Pvt. John P. Chips broke from his handler and jumped into the pillbox, attacking the gunners. The iv crewmen were forced to go out the pillbox and surrendered to United states of america troops. In the fight, he sustained a scalp wound and powder burns. Later that 24-hour interval, he helped take ten Italians prisoner.[2]

For his actions during the war, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross,[3] Silver Star[1] and Purple Heart;[one] however, these awards were after revoked due to an Army policy preventing official commendation of animals.[1] His unit unofficially awarded him a theater ribbon with an arrowhead for an assault landing, and battle stars for each of his eight campaigns.[2]

Chips was discharged in Dec 1945 and returned to the Wren family unit. In 1990, Disney fabricated a TV moving-picture show based on his life, entitled Chips, the War Dog.[4]
